The village of Phuktsey constitutes a remarkable architectural ensemble, still largely preserved from modern transformations. However, it is now under threat: nearly 70% of the dwellings are deteriorated due to the harsh climate and the gradual abandonment of the village by its inhabitants.

Without or with very limited traces of modernisation, the old village of Phuktsey symbolises the treasure of architectural heritage of Ladakh.
Since about fifteen years, the villagers are abandoning their homes due to the inhabitable conditions of the houses. Over 70% of the houses have undergone damages. This is a situation that is worsened by the recent climatic changes.
The religious sites (like the Stupas, the Lhatos, the LhuBang) and the temples of the valley are also in need of restoration. Phuktsey village possesses remarkable architectural and historical rich assets.

The ancient village of Phuktsey is being brought back to life through a remarkable community-led restoration initiative.
More than the preservation of an exceptional architectural heritage, this project aims to safeguard local culture, revive traditional knowledge and craftsmanship, and create new opportunities for future generations. By transforming the old village into a vibrant cultural and artistic centre, the initiative promotes sustainable development rooted in local identity, collective memory, and community participation.

On the occasion of the inauguration of this ambitious project, we are delighted to present the exhibition Writing Peace, a UNESCO programme of action for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence, initiated by Professor Eric Cattelain, who will be present to mark this special occasion.
The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the role of writing, dialogue, and cultural exchange in fostering mutual understanding and building lasting peace among communities and nations.
Revitalisation: a cultural and social project
The project goes beyond the simple renovation of buildings and religious sites (stupas, temples); it aims to transform the old village into a vibrant and attractive cultural hub:

The houses and covered alleyways will be transformed into spaces for exhibitions, conferences, and educational workshops.

Support for local craftsmanship
Some of the restored homes will be made available to local artisans to preserve traditional skills and offer visitors an authentic cultural experience.
