Nestled at the northernmost edge of India, Ladakh, with its breathtaking landscapes, snow-capped mountains, and unique way of life, embodies a distinct cultural identity. Rebuilding the Future takes us on a journey through this enchanting region, focusing in particular on the ancient village of Phuktsey, a symbol of Ladakh’s architectural heritage.
Over the past fifteen years, the villagers of Phuktsey have been forced to abandon their homes due to increasingly uninhabitable living conditions, worsened by climate change. More than 70% of the houses have been damaged, and religious sites, including stupas and lhubangs, are in need of restoration. The village faces three major challenges: declining living conditions, the gradual disappearance of the village, and a lack of awareness regarding the importance of local heritage.
The documentary presents a comprehensive restoration project involving local service providers and experts. Its main objectives are to preserve the region’s cultural heritage, create a new tourism route, and establish a renewed identity for the valley. Traditional Ladakhi houses, religious sites, and narrow streets will be restored using local building materials and the skills of traditional craftsmen, ensuring the preservation of the region’s architectural style.
Rebuilding the Future highlights the restoration process, emphasizing the commitment of the community and the transformation of renovated houses into cultural and artistic centers. These spaces will host exhibitions, educational workshops, and conferences, becoming hubs for traditional practices and local craftsmanship.
The film was shot over a period of more than one year, capturing the valley’s diverse seasonal activities — from spring sowing to autumn harvest. It also allows viewers to experience the valley’s traditional festivals and celebrations.
While the film captures the essence of Ladakh and the challenges faced by the village of Phuktsey, it also imagines a future where the younger generation returns to bring the village back to life and ensure the continuity of traditional practices. Rebuilding the Future aims not only to document the struggles of Phuktsey but also to inspire viewers to appreciate and contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage in the face of modernization. The documentary invites audiences to witness the beauty, resilience, and aspirations of a community committed to rebuilding its future.
